Third graders can write an essay with a simple thesis statement, examples and supporting details, and a thoughtful concluding sentence. They are building skills in the writing process — research, planning, organizing, revising, and editing (with help from teachers and peers).
When they have done both parts of the essay ask them to work out the title. You may want to ask them to do this before you let them look at the alternatives given in the second part of Exercise 2. For homework, you may want to give the students another essay from the list in part (ii). Ask them to adapt the information they have to write the essay.
